Ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, representing the Ogun Central Senatorial District, has sponsored the registration of over 1,000 indigent students across the district.
The intervention, implemented through the OMOYAYI Educational support programme covered the full cost of registration for beneficiaries selected from the six local government areas in the district: Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Ewekoro, Ifo, Obafemi Owode, and Odeda. The initiative was designed to address the financial barriers that often prevent qualified students from accessing higher education.
Speaking on the initiative, Senator Salisu explained that the gesture was aimed at empowering the next generation and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder academic ambitions.
“We cannot talk about development without investing in our youth. Education is the bedrock of society, and it is a collective responsibility to ensure that financial constraints do not rob any bright mind of the chance to go to school,” the Senator stated.
He further emphasised the broader societal benefits of educational investment: “An educated population is essential for innovation, economic growth, and good governance. When we invest in education, we are not just helping individuals; we are building the foundation for a stronger, more resilient nation.”
The registration exercise, which ran from 23rd February until the deadline, saw a dedicated team deployed across the district to register beneficiaries directly at designated points.
For many of the recipients, the sponsorship was life-changing. Miss Adaeze Chukwu, a beneficiary from Ifo, expressed her gratitude: “I had given up on registering this year because my parents couldn’t afford the form. When I heard about Senator Salisu’s program, I rushed to the venue. The process was smooth, and I am now fully registered. I am deeply grateful to him for this opportunity.”
Another beneficiary, Ogunleye Ridwan from Abeokuta South, described the support as a chance to build a future. “This is more than just a form to me. Senator Salisu has shown that he truly cares about the youth. I promise to study hard and make him proud,” he said.
Senator Salisu assured constituents that the initiative is part of a broader commitment to empowerment in Ogun Central, with further programs planned in education, skills development, and economic support.
