July 15, 2025by Senator SAS0

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, joined prominent Nigerians, including former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, to pay their last respects to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The revered monarch, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, was laid to rest at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, after reigning for 65 years—the longest in Nigeria’s history.

Governor Abiodun, in his tribute, described the late Awujale as a pride of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria, highlighting his immense contributions to education, governance, and community development. The governor noted that Oba Adetona’s legacy includes the establishment of a professorial chair on governance and the elevation of the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies into a full-fledged campus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

“Baba was a phenomenon, a monarch like no other. His reign was defined by his towering influence, deep wisdom, and enduring legacy of integrity, generosity, and progress,” Governor Abiodun stated. He also acknowledged the late monarch’s role in shaping legislation that granted traditional rulers the freedom to choose their burial rites.

Former Governor Olusegun Osoba recalled the Awujale’s vibrant personality, noting that he remained active until his passing. Aliko Dangote, who shared a close relationship with the late monarch, praised his remarkable life and achievements at 91.

The funeral was attended by several high-profile figures, including Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Mr. Bosun Tijani, and former governors Gbenga Daniel, Ibikunle Amosun, and James Ibori.

Senator Salisu’s presence at the event underscored the deep respect and admiration for the late Awujale, whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
